The prestigious Japanese magazine Famitsu has become echo of new information on Biohazard 5 (Resident Evil 5 in the West). Zu deutsch:
- 4 bekannte Charaktere in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt
- Partner-Zapping-System aus "Resident Evil Zero"
- Weder Zombies noch Ganados in der Demo
- Rückkehr der Türsequenzen (???)
- Wenig Munition (???)
I’m saving my favorite for now simply because of how scared we got in the studio at this game. It comes from Clover of which Shinji Mikami is heading this game. He also is doing a separate Resident Evil exclusive for the Revolution releasing in 2008. After we played through this hour long demo all I have is one thing to say. This game is truly terrifying. I mean I am a grown man and I was turning on lights I usually don’t at night because of this game. Right now its just called “The Joy of Lights” and you will NEVER forget the horrors this game has in store for you. It has no supernatural demons or imps or monsters of any kinds. It all has to do with humans who are monsters at heart. This game seems to be heavily if not completely influenced by a movie I saw a couple years back called “Ravenous”. Which was just as weird as this game but not nearly as creepy and horrifying. The eerie and unnerving music from that movie is unsettlingly still in tact. It’s a mix of this hick banjo-twang violin-techno and is the most creepy music I have ever heard in my life. The game is set in the winter of a desolate remote part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains set in the year 1806. Yeah that’s right, when’s the last time you played a game set in the 1800’s. It starts of with this guy Captain John Boyd who is fighting in the American-Mexican war. Ultimately in one sequence you have to either die or hide underneath a huge pile of dead and dying bodies of American soldiers. To get close enough to take out the commanding officer and kill him so you can win the battle and allow your fellow soldiers to storm in. We got a hands-on play of the demo and I’m not going to spoil anything. But you will be very impressed if not deeply disturbed and terrified for the rest of your life.
The last game that I will mention that has me more than really stoked is Resident Evil 5. I know this is what you’ve been waiting for since I mentioned I’d played it for ten minutes. It is headed for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution. It hasn’t been announced yet for Revolution because nearly none of the third-party, second-party or even first-party games have been given the okay to be shown or announced. This is why there are no screenshots or trailers of any kind around that are based on the Revolution hardware.
Anyway, Resident Evil 5 looks amazing. It is almost as realistic as our game which is astonishing seeing it hasn’t been in development for nearly as long and will look identical on all three consoles. Of course lacking HD support on Revolution. Chris Redfield is the main character and it will be set in Turkey, Pakistan and in central Europe and is set exactly two years after RE4. The game will address a lot of unanswered questions about Resident Evil 4. Like who is the “organization” that Ada is really working for, discover that her and Wesker are still playing a cat and mouse game. There is also the realization that Wesker has almost if not completely revitalized Umbrella in secrecy in conjunction with S enterprise pharmaceuticals. We also get to find out who that weird merchant was and who he was really working for. Capcom reps. told us while we were playing that Leon will make an appearance, and be playable in the new and improved Mercenaries mode. Which for 360 will be COMPLETE ONLINE WITH CO-OP, AND CO-OP THROUGH THE SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN!!!!!!!! Damn, I think I am going to be on 360 side if Nintendo doesn’t get that Wi-Fi Connection with the same feature. Which I think they will and probably add some new stuff. The parts we played were cool. I was playing as Chris Redfield and he comes equipped with a 9mm Berretta military issue custom handgun w/ green laser sight. He knife is a Pakistani model he got on one of his missions.
But lets get back to the reason that we started talking about Chris Redfield and whys he’s here. Chris Redfield is a former member of the S.T.A.R.S. team and since then he has been working with parts of the government like Leon did but they were totally unaware of each other. Whereas Leon went on to get government training and be part of the Secret Service protecting the President’s Daughter. Chris’ skills were looked at by the Pentagon (after Racoon City) and he has been training with the CIA to be a CIA black ops operative/contractor (in lamens: those are super soldiers who were trained like the operatives during the Cold War) we don’t train many of these like this in the real world anymore but we still train a few to be “Super Spy’s”. Anyway that’s what Chris Redfield is. He has been sent to spy on a barren part of Turkey. The problem with this place is that the Sun it inexplicability brighter and hotter in the area, and it gets to freezing temperatures at dusk. It’s the only place on earth that has this recent phenomenon. His mission is to find out the secrets of this phenomenon and report any National Security risks.
The gameplay is very similar but also very different and improved. Like when he draws his knife this time you can really get in and do some damage with it. He can do all sorts of different attacks with it now. The over-the-shoulder perspective is back as well and works almost identical to RE4 albeit more animations. Chris will also have to make use of shadows and warm places to avoid extremely bright and sometimes burning light as well as freezing temperatures at night. As Chris will take realistic damage depending on what happens. The lighting effects, and hot and cold effects are very well-done and can really blur out and effect your vision during combat to affect gameplay. The combat effects are also just as good. Now you can see realistic damage on the enemies before and after death. It is a similar technique as in our game although not as realistic or anatomical but still looks very good. The context-sensitive interactive cut scenes are back from RE4 and are just as great if not even better believe it or not. They streamline in with the game just like RE4 and all are different depending on the situation. There is also an emphasis on using physics to your advantage like shooting one zombie and tripping the others and learning how to use the physics to your advantage. You still can’t walk with your gun drawn but this time you can walk as you wish with the knife drawn. There is also an extensive use of cover to even the odds against overwhelming hordes or enemies and very tough ones.
The enemies in the game that we played against were zombies which had the been infected with the T virus and had plagas inside their bodies. Some will even have the G-type virus and new forms of plagas we were told. They also have an unknown bacteria in their bodies that makes them insensitive to the brightness of the sun. They were very intelligent also, they would of course duck out of the way of your shots and go for cover. But they will often try to flank you and use different tactics to take you down as a group. The AI is designed like our game in that nothing ever happens quite the same way twice…much like RE4 did.
The new weapons I will only mention what I was told not speculation. Chris will always switch between a green and red laser sight from day to night. Day having the green laser sight and at night having the red. The lasers switch automatically for you. Some of the weapons we were told would appear are seven different handguns, four different magnums, six different shotguns, four different long-range rifles, eight different machine guns and assault rifles, four different submachine guns, three different rocket launchers, a grenade launcher, and all the guns from both versions of RE4 will be selectable. The only specifics weapons I could get are a SAW (type of assault rifle), Spaz Mark 1, Uzi, DX 3700 B (ricochet gun), Chainsaw and machete. The cool part is that sometimes during combat you will be prompted to perform an interactive cut scene while your shooting in which he will dispose of zombies your aren’t able to handle with just one gun depending on what weapon you have set. So suppose your firing with an Uzi and you have a magnum set he will draw the magnum and kill the zombies that are posing the threat. What’s cool about this is that it never takes you out of the action and never stops you from aiming and firing. He just does the action when you successfully trigger the interactive cutscene without disrupting your game play. Which is awesome. This really comes in handy considering at some times there will be between 50-100 zombies at once on-screen. They told us that in a few sequences (that we haven’t seen of course) that there will be up to 1500 zombies on-screen at once. Pretty respectable if you ask me given that this is a multi-platform game. There are also new kinds of ammo you can get for certain guns. Like for the Beretta 9mm handgun we picked up regular, explosive and hollow point bullets. We were told there will be many more kinds of ammo for all the different weapons. Of course all of them will be upgradeable like in RE4. Regular grenades, flash grenades, and incendiary grenades all will make a welcome return as well. There is also a freeze grenade, and acid shells for the grenade launcher. This time though all explosive weapons sport somewhat exaggerated rag doll physics that affect Chris, enemies and the environment dynamically. The weapon selection screen is very much the same as in RE4. Although instead of pressing a button to bring up the screen. You can set the weapons recovery screen to a full-sized window, or a smaller window that appears on the bottom right of the screen. While we were playing this ten minute demo I was astounded how good and promising this game really is going to be. I think if it releases in 2007 we might be wrestling between our game, this and Joy of Lights for “Game of the Year 2007”. I believe Fumitsu is doing a hands-on article on this game in Feb. So stay tuned for that.
