First up, tell us who you are and what you do over at SUMO Digital.
Hello there, I'm Steve Lycett and I'm one of the Producers on OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast. So I look after the team, make sure things are going in the right direction and order the pizza!
Do you own a Ferrari? Just out of interest.
Actually I own several, an Enzo, a Testarossa and a F40. However since they're all about six inches long, I reckon I'll need to do some shrinking before I can drive any of them...
OutRun2 on Xbox was a near perfect conversion of the arcade version that preceded it, and was a massive critical success. What initial approach did you take with Coast 2 Coast to make sure it will do even better?
First, we know we've got to match or exceed what we did for OutRun2 - offer the best conversion we can - and then add new content that expands on the arcade game. This time we've included an arcade perfect conversion of OutRun2 SP - it's exactly as it appears in the arcade - both in game and right down to the interface. Just you don't need a bag of coins.
Then we've taken onboard feedback from what people found confusing in OutRun2 - such as the unlocks. Now you earn OutRun miles as you play - and can buy new cars, tracks and other surprises in the in-game shop. This way you have control over what you want to get next. The same feedback has also helped focus what was important for multiplayer, there's a greater focus on being able to customise the game to play it the way you want and the online ranking has been expanded.
The missions were very popular last time - we've taken this and refined the concept further, expanding on the missions so there is plenty to see and do. Without going into too much detail, this is where the Coast 2 Coast name comes from, and you can bet your bottom dollar there'll be more slick Ferrari action than ever before in an OutRun game.
At the end of the day, we've got to go one better than last time. We all understand this - and we're pushing to make improvements across the board.
The Big New Thing here, obviously, is that we'll be seeing the OutRun franchise on the PS2 and PSP for the first time. What can we expect to be the major draws for the PSP version - I assume wireless multiplayer will be a big factor, for example?
The PSP version is coming on very nicely. Every so often you have to stop and think that we've managed to squash a full-size OutRun SP arcade machine onto a handheld system - and it's a very, very accurate conversion. That's before you consider that we're also adding extra content in the form of PSP-specific missions, for example.
Wireless multiplayer is definitely on the menu. You can play either Ad-hoc with a bunch of friends around you or via Infrastructure across the Internet, so you could play against people in the next street, or the next continent!
And what about PSP and PS2 connectivity - will there be anything to look forward to on that front?
Certainly. Both the PS2 and PSP version have specific content; by linking the two together you can unlock the content in the other.
You are also able to transfer your licence. So let's say you play the game on the PS2 at night, and then in the morning you transfer your licence to the PSP. Then on the train to work you can carry on playing from where you left off, gaining OutRun miles and unlocking some new cars and tracks on the PSP. Then get home, link up again and carry on with the PS2.
That's just some of the features we've got in the works - I don't want to ruin all of the surprises :-)
Technically, what have been the major challenges in producing a version of the game for PSP?
Getting the game into the PSP has been technically quite difficult. You've got to bear in mind that although the PSP is a very powerful system, you've still got to consider that it's got less memory and horsepower than a dedicated arcade cabinet. So we've had to spend time working on all the artwork to make it smaller, yet retaining the detail - OutRun is all about the beautiful journey after all, and the new Ferraris on show here are more beautiful than ever, if that's possible. And quicker.
Next we've been working to keep the speed and feel - in effect the whole spirit and soul of the game. So we've ensured that whilst it is pretty, it has to have the same smooth feel of the arcade - the same depth of control.
I very much feel that people are going to be surprised at what we've been able to achieve. It's OutRun - right there in your palm.
The OutRun series is famous for its Ferraris. The good news is that there's even more of them this time! What cars will we be driving, and what are the new ones?
It's just not OutRun without a Testarossa! All the old favourite OutRun2 cars are back, so the F40, Enzo, Spider, Dino, Daytona are all there. They're being joined by a whole new garage of Ferraris, so players can now jump into a F430 Spider, the Superamerica and the 550 Barchetta, amongst others.
Unlike previous OutRun games, Coast 2 Coast will allow gamers to drive race-modified versions of the cars, right? How does that all work?
Essentially these will be tuned up versions of the car roster, all producing more power and therefore a faster top speed, but also requiring experience to get the best out of them. It's a risk / reward situation; these cars can give you better times, but you're going to need to be able to handle them in order to do it.
In terms of looks and design, we've worked very closely with Ferrari to ensure they are genuine and realistic. I'm sure there is some worry that we might be heading into car-modding territory but this isn't the case. Instead you'll be getting some tuned Italian exotica to take to the very limit of your ability.
There's also something new this time in terms of mission-based gameplay, beyond the well-known branching race structure. How does the mission system work?
Right now I don't want to discuss this in any great depth - since otherwise there will be no surprises at release! However, the missions are still there to test your driving skill. We've got a good blend of Race Missions and Heart Attack missions, all of which rank you at the end. If you can achieve grade A or above, you can unlock new missions to play, though the form of the map this time is not what you'd expect. I'll leave it at that!
We hear a major new component to the gameplay this time will be Slipstreaming. How does this work in the game?
Slipstreaming is when you manage to get behind another vehicle and take advantage the airstream behind it. Effectively the front vehicle creates a pocket behind it, if you can get your car into this pocket, then drag is reduced on your car.
In practical terms, this allows you to get up to - and above - your car's top speed. Whilst you are in Slipstream, your points also rise faster. So effectively you can get higher scores and more points for shadowing vehicles and quick passing. Whilst you are slipstreaming there is an on-screen prompt, so you know when you're in the right area.
It's a lot of fun, but you'll have to take my word for it till the game is out!
OutRun2 was brilliant online. Presumably, Coast 2 Coast will be too. What can we expect when we take the game online?
All platforms are online enabled. All platforms allow you to race online against other players. You can choose to join a quick match and jump into a game, or search for a server that has the game type you want to join.
There are some new game types, such as Drift modes. You can pick from a list of game types or hit a randomise button to pick random ones, there are a lot more options than we've done before. Again, a lot of this is the result of feedback we've had from OutRun2 on Xbox.
On top of this all versions of the game allow you to download ghosts and compare your times with other players across the world. We want a huge global OutRun community to enjoy playing the game and we've made sure the support is in there for this to happen.
