I'm gonna provide my perspective as an "industry insider":The push for Unreal Engine comes from its focus on providing developers with shortcuts and ready-made solutions to common needs. It's the engine that makes it the easiest to approach realism due to its default settings being tuned towards that goal, and things such as free asset giveaways by Epic, or Nanite automating LOD are supposed to look attractive in terms of cutting development time. The actual bottom line of that phenomenon - it's expensive to keep senior staff around. Experienced developers want higher salaries. If you make Unreal the engine students learn in universities and then suddenly all of the big studios post job openings for Unreal, you get to get the job done while keeping the costs to the minimum, because you're either taking fresh graduates or interns. And if they mature enough to start demanding higher salaries? Fire them and replace them with an another batch of newbies. Since the engine is industry standard, there's always enough semi-competent hands to go around.I fully expect the industry to turn even more into a revolving door situation, experienced developer having a harder time finding jobs than ever before. I hope I'm wrong, but given the current state of the industry, that seems to be the direction things are going in.Also, forgot to mention explicitly - if I'm right, games WILL keep getting worse in terms of bugginess and performance. If the goal is to get something out the door cheaply and make it look good in a trailer, all while leaning on intern labor AND rushing development - it's not gonna be pretty.
