Assassin’s Creed: Unity is out today in the US, but some people seem to have been getting their copies early with videos of the game appearing on YouTube yesterday. Unfortunately, some of those people who got their hands on the game early are reporting that there are significant technical problems with Assassin’s Creed: Unity, most notably the framerate.
“Seriously I get the game is massive, but jesus the framerate in this game is atrocious,” said Reddit user Merkwerk talking about the PS4 version of Assassin’s Creed: Unity. “It’s not even close to a locked 30 fps, it feels like it’s running at 20 something most of the time and I’ve had it drop way below that a couple of times already.”
Or there’s this from Shehan 1993: “Are you guys experiencing pop ins and huge frame rate drops especially in huge crowds? I’m playing on the ps4. Got any advice to fix this?”
Sind das Berichte von der Version mit oder ohne den Day One Patch?
vermutlich ohne Patch und damit nicht sonderlich Aussagenkräftig
Assassin's Creed: Unity performance reportedly choppy and glitchy on all platforms
Even after playing for just under ten hours, (UPDATE: To be clear, this original report was written after installing the ~900MB patch) it's clear that there are some glaring technical issues with Assassin's Creed: Unity.
In terms of technical execution, the game is an utter shambles on PS4 -- I can't speak first-hand regarding other versions. Glitches abound, responsiveness is laughable, the context-sensitive detection areas around interactive objects like key mission items and reward chests are patchy and inconsistent. The crowds are impressive, the game does a fine job of creating a visually engaging representation of Paris, but the framerate is horrible. Lengthy jumps see Arno hang in the air, crippling slowdown is everywhere (especially if you get into cover), and although the free-running repertoire and animation sets have been massively expanded, its not uncommon to see the framerate juddering down below the 15 fps mark.
At one point, I thought the whole game was going to crash, Arno pirouetting about in clunky slow-motion that certainly hadn't been triggered deliberately.
Pop-in is also a problem, especially when it comes to transitioning between indoor environments and the outdoors. Rooms will occasionally only reveal a back wall as you're climbing in the through the window, and its not uncommon for a building only a street or two away to seemingly materialise out of thin air.
As stated above, the US launch is today, with the UK release set for this Friday. We only received code a couple of days ago and the game is huge, so it'll be a few days until we're ready to deliver our verdict. These problems might end up being fixed by the time our review is ready, but the game is already out in some parts of the world, and it's therefore important to let customers know what they're in for.
At the moment, what they're in for is a glitchy, technical mess on PS4, and we've received further reports this morning that the PC version is having framerate issues as well, even with high-end GeForce cards.
UPDATE: It seems as though there may be framerate issues across all platforms, with NowGamer reporting Xbox One issues as well:
"I would like to warn anyone thinking about buying this game,” said thewouldbeking. “I got it with my Xbox bundle. I just started it, and it runs sub 30 frames per second constantly. I would advise to wait until its fixed or not buy it at all. It is practically unplayable.”
