IGN-Wertung Resident Evil 1

Closing Comments
I played through and beat the original Resident Evil -- several times, in fact. So I had my concerns about whether or not this GameCube remake, outstanding visual and audio presentations aside, would really be worth the effort again. The good news, though, is that it is. Even if Capcom had not changed a single gameplay-related element, Resident Evil remake would have been an amazing action-adventure -- spookier than ever before and totally worth the trip. But there are new additions, and lots of them, from the different mansion layouts to the new defensive moves, the new enemies, the gruesome original bosses and storyline extras, the 10 different endings, and so much more.
The one thing that hasn't changed, my biggest complaint, is the control system. It's still digital for reasons unknown. You can use control 'Type C' so that characters can run and turn at the same time, a nice addition, but overall the control hasn't advanced much from the original. This is disappointing, of course, but it hardly ruins the experience. The play is still very fun and very challenging. Sometimes too challenging, perhaps. It's a hard game. You'll have to invest some time into it and indeed, on the most difficult setting, be prepared for some long nights. Capcom has extended the replay value of the adventure quite nicely, but in doing so has also included some rather troublesome gameplay mechanics and objectives, the biggest of which are the limiting inventory system, some of the out of whack puzzles which seem to make no sense, and some of the forced routes through the mansion. In some cases, doorknobs actually fall off doors so that you can't go back the same way you came in, forcing you to go around, and around, and around again.

But if those are the drawbacks, sign me up. The graphics -- totally revamped, enhanced and tweaked -- are the prettiest on GameCube yet and indeed as of this game's release, the most impressive I've seen in any game on any console. Beautiful art mixes with outrageous technology for environments that look nearly photo realistic and yet animate accordingly too, cast shadows, and more. Characters, high polygon and wonderfully constructed, animate with an eerie realism, blood and bone particles splatter in a disgusting, too gruesome fashion, and every corner presents a new scare. The audio portion of the game is just as high in caliber, crisp and clear, allowing nightmarish moans and screams and everything in between. It's just a very complete package in this regard.

So there are a couple of issues, sure. It's not a perfect game. But Resident Evil is easily the scariest, most atmospheric videogame I've very played. It's the only one I've ever been afraid to play alone. It's a triumph as a stand-alone adventure and a major accomplishment as a remake. Every gamer -- whether you've played the original or have never heard of the franchise -- should pick this up for their GameCube. It's one of the must-haves that you'll cherish not only as a truly fantastic, spooky videogame,
but as a technical feat and prize that you can show your friends who still doubt the power and capabilities of Nintendo's next-generation console in the hands of the right developer.

Stop reading now. Turn your computer off, buy this game, and enjoy. The wait is over.

I know you're not going to believe it, but I never really played the original Resident Evils. Hmm, have I lost my credibility yet? Fortunately it comes in quite handy for this review, as I know there are readers in the same boat as myself. Did you find the control of the originals frustrating, the visuals not quite as realistic as you'd like? I played a decent amount of Resident Evil 2, but it just didn't totally grab my attention. I know it captivated some, but much like my experience with, say, Tomb Raider, while others couldn't get enough of it, I was unwilling to compromise to the controls.
Queue the Resident Evil for GameCube. Plain and simple, the visuals and art design are dazzling, a brilliant feat by a team so talented I often have trouble wrapping my mind around it. I sold my soul to Resident Evil as soon as took my first step into the mansion -- all thanks to the visuals.

My jaw drops every time I see this one particular scene -- an area outside the mansion which features layers of fog rolling in over a backdrop of animated trees, swaying under the moonlight. Meanwhile, the mansion is slightly out of focus up on the hill and darn near photorealistic water pours down a jagged rock face onto the muddy ground below, which will splash when stepped upon. It's the money shot, and for this reason alone Resident Evil is somehow worth playing. Even if these environments were barren of any brain-eating zombies or decapitating Hunters, I'd enjoy myself I think. It's a bit like going to an art museum, I suppose. Each pre-rendered background is worth noting for its eye-popping detail.

Of course, I'm not implying that Resident Evil would be worth your money if it were boring to play. Maybe worth my money because I'm unhealthily obsessed with the visual presentation, but perhaps not yours. Fortunately, Resident Evil is a suspenseful romp with impressively moody gameplay, all thanks to gritty environments and a constant current of dark, gory themes. Resident Evil sets a brilliant mood and is filled with mind-tricks and twitch-scares. You'll never want to walk by a window in your darkened house again after playing this game. Are those branches scratching on the pane of the glass, or a blood-thirsty zombie? Only one way to find out -- and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Truly, this is what makes Resident Evil worth it. The puzzles, while not totally clever, keep you interested, and the combat with enemies is intense enough to keep the pace. But, what draws you forward the most are the surprises. A zombie through a window, a dog over the gate, or malformed super-zombie that sneaks in while you're not looking -- you never know what's next.

The soundtrack is awesome, albeit a bit repetitive at times. The stunningly dissonant orchestrations will grab you by the back of your neck and throw you
full force into a state of fear on their own. You often want to run just from the rooms with these orchestrations because they're so maddening. They're very well done. My only complaint is the lack of Dolby support, which can be done quite easily with the tools included with the GameCube development kit. I won't even mention the lack of ambition to secure Dolby Pro Logic II, which would have been brilliant for this cinematic title. Instead, you're left with a three channel surround up front, that pans accurately. However, the rear surround effects are mostly ambient, leaving audiophiles wishing for more.

All in all, Resident Evil is stunning, one of the best titles available for GameCube. If you have full control over your bowels, buy this game. If you don't, purchase a few sets of clean underwear, then buy this game.

Presentation
Remade, revamped and scarier than ever. Slick menus, lots of options and more. 10.0

Graphics
We debated going higher. Beautiful pre-rendered backdrops, amazing art, particles, shadows, lighting, and polygon characters. Nearly flawless. Some cut-scene pauses, stiff animation, etc. 9.0

Sound
No DPLII, but just about everything else done right. Surround sound -- moody moans, screams, growls. You will jump. Lots of effects for different situations. Great, thrilling music. Poor voice acting. 9.0

Gameplay
A blast the first time through because it's so atmospheric. Satisfying fights with enemies, interesting, if baffling puzzles, the draw to keep exploring. Frustrating mansion layouts, control issues. 8.0

Lasting Appeal
Difficult game. 12 hours or more for most gamers. And enough reason to go through it several times. 10 different endings, for starters! 8.0

OVERALL SCORE (not an average) 9.0

Electronic Arts vertreibt Resident Evil in Europa

Resident Evil in Europa unzensiert
