PN03: Product Number 03 Impressionen
Although initially, I thought otherwise of the game, my opinion on PN03 has become a lot more positive now: This game rocks! I think the curse of mediocre and/or rehashed Capcom action games
(RE0, DMC2, Chaos Legion) has finally been broken.
You play as Vanessa Z. Schneider, a bounty hunter who seems to have a fetish for dancing, and travel to a remote planet, enter a base/factory, and simply blow everything up. That's it. No princess to save, demon kings to kill, no deadly virus outbreak to cure: You're there to kick ass.
PN03 is a simple, old-school arcade style 3rd person shooter. There is very little story line, in-game exploration, and no keys to find or puzzles to solve whatever, which is actually rather refreshing given the way most of Capcom's third person action games have been. The game is also on the short side, not counding the trial missons(see below), and can apparently be completed in about 2 hours. However, "arcade" is definitely the best term to describe PN03, since it's made to be replayed over and over, similar to
Contra or
Metal Slug.

Playing through the first stage, I thought that PN03 was a bit too easy, and the first stage gave me the impression that PN03 is nothing more than run (straight forward)n' gun the whole time. I've now played up to the fourth stage, and completed several trial missions in the process, and things have gotten a bit more varied and more fun.
The game play in PN03 basically works like this:
Each level is comprised of a certain number of "rooms." Rooms are a variety of sizes, so one room you get to may be as big as the four rooms before it combined. The rooms have a certain number of enemies that pop up, and/or laser traps. While the first stage doesn't show this as much, the mechs you fight will begin to get much more aggressive as you proceed through the game. Instead of just sitting and place and firing, they begin to move right up to you or duck behind walls, pop out, and shoot, much like Vanessa can do to them.

You will encounter flying mechs that teleport around rooms, fast-moving mechs that fire missles as well as machine guns, larger, more stationary mechs that fire huge beam cannons(that can kill you in ONE BLAST, so you must avoid their line of fire at all costs), and mechs that drop mines as they move towards you. In addition, the laser traps will get more and more complicated, moving around a corridor, going off for a split second, or both. You will have to time your movement through these areas, rolling or jumping past them, and sometimes having to shoot down enemies in the process. There's even a tiny bit of platforming, where you'll have to jump to higher ground to continue on or find secrets.

It isn't just the A.I. that's made me like PN03 a lot more than I did at first. The trial missions really help to add replay to the game. Every time you finish a stage, you get the option to play a trial mission, which is always composed of 15 rooms. The room and enemy layout will be randomized EVERY time you play a trial mission, but what's even cooler about that is that the rooms will be taken from each stage you finished, so on stage 7, a trial mission may have rooms from stage 1, 3, 4, 5, etc., in a different order every time! Trial missions are not only challenging and fun to play, but the points you earn carries over to the main game, so you can buy items from beating them each time.

And the control really works. The "Lara Croft" turning takes a little getting used to, but fortunately, the game is never cheap in that it will throw enemies out of your vision(so far). When enemies do appear behind you, you are given enough time to move or turn around(the Z button does a 180) from the audio that you hear of them, making everything seem really "fair"(again, so far). The camera is also fantastic: It's always behind Vanessa, but using the C-stick, you can manually set it to stay below, above, or to the right or left of her. This works perfectly for spotting enemies. For example, if you find yourself going down a long hallway curving to the right and an enemy approaching, you can duck behind a wall, then shift the camera to the left for a perfect view of the approacing enemy. When you duck back out, Vanessa will be aiming right at it and you can kill the mech before it knows what hit it.
Somewhere in each stage, as well as when you finish a level, you will find a shop, which appears in the game as a glowing sphere. Here, you can purchase new suits, and upgrade different aspects of them, such as your shooting power, defensive power, autofire(for some suits), etc. You can also purchase new super moves, called "energy drives," of which there are two for every suit. These moves are what make Vanessa appear to be dancing when you use them, although personally, aside from her standing and shooting "hip swivel" animation, it's more like Vanessa is striking Japanese superhero-style poses than shaking her groove thing.

graphics are a mixed bag. Get used to the white rooms; it's pretty much all you see. That said, there is some variety to the rooms you go through, with some nice lighting effects and various obstacles or platforms to jump to/duck behind. In addition to walls , there are also
Halo-like shields to hide behind, crates to jump on, and barriers to duck under. Despite the game's jaggies, it does look very good overall, and Vanessa is very well animated. The music in PN03 is simply awesome.
This is an almost REZ-quality techno soundtrack (but more repetitive sounding, of course); it really picks up after the first stage.
And while the Trial missions
help to give PN03 a good bit of replay value, the game also has hidden suits to unlock(one of which makes the game become a "sudden death" mode, as one hit from any enemy will kill you) and at least one extra difficulty setting to unlock as well. PN03 not only keeps score, but also keeps track of the time it takes you to complete a room and stage, gives you bonuses for combo kills and not getting hit, and also gives you a ranking based on your performance, which adds even more to the game play.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with PN03. What initially felt like a "budget title" game has blossomed into a great shooter with enough replay value to make it a keeper for me.

Those looking for a good 3rd person "shmup" reminiscent of something you might have played during the 8 and 16 bit eras(the game reminds a lot of a modern day
Xybots, in fact), and enjoy replaying a game for a higher score should definitely give PN03 a purchase. Everyone else should just give the game a rental; those looking for the next
Resident Evil or
Devil May Cry will not find that game here.
