Electronic Arts announced today that it will bring its popular World War II action franchise, Medal of Honor, to Pearl Harbor this fall when it unleashes Medal of Honor Rising Sun for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube. Rising Sun will be set during the Pacific Theatre of Operations from 1941-1944, giving players a first-hand experience of what it was like to fight the Japanese from the beginnings of the attack on Pearl Harbor to the battle on the shores of the Philippine Islands. Players will assume the role of Marine Corporal Joseph Griffin, who manages to survive the attack on Pearl Harbor, and goes on to lead the assault of Guadalcanal, and takes on a mission to rescue his brother from a Japanese POW camp in the Philippines. Players will be armed with weaponry and equipment available at that time during WWII, and will be able to play the game with a buddy via the co-op multiplayer mode. During the course of surviving each mission players can earn awards and medals for various acts of bravery and other accomplishments. The game is being developed with the input of Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Capt. Dale Dye, who served as military technical advisor on the previous titles in the Medal of Honor franchise.
Electronic Arts also revealed at a media event (late last night) to promote the new games in the MoH line-up including a second Allied Assault expansion, the aforementioned console game Rising Sun for various next-gen console platforms and a new PC game set in the Pacific Theater of Operations. They also mentioned a follow-up to Rising Sun, but didn't offer details on what this particular game is all about.
According to notes taken by one of GameSpy's news ninjas at the event, EA plans to release a second expansion to Medal of Honor: Allied Assault in the summer of 2003. The expansion will be set in Italy and North Africa, though further details were not available.
EA also talked briefly about Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault a sequel to Medal of Honor that takes the game series to the historical and often times bloody battles in Japan. Much like Rising Sun, Pacific Assault begins with the attack on Pearl Harbor, though right now we don't know how closely both games' storylines and content will be related. Finally, EA mentioned a follow-up title to Rising Sun for next-gen consoles scheduled for a release sometime near the 2004 holiday season. This game will reportedly focus on Griffin's brother, and is also set in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
GameSpy will have a full blown preview of many of these games later this week, but in the interim check out these first shots of Rising Sun for the PlayStation 2.
