Presentation
The superb opening credits and cinemas found early in the game make this game feel like a million bucks. Plus, there are a ton of options placed in some incredibly slick menus. 9.0
Graphics
Quite possibly one of the best looking games out on any system. What's not to like? 9.5
Sound
Great music and good voices litter the game at all times. It just could have used a little more oomph... 8.5
Gameplay
A great mix of several somewhat related genres, along with some new ideas thrown in for good measure. The best part is, it all works beautifully together. 9.0
Lasting Appeal
A lengthy quest, customizable weapons and vehicles, good mini-games, and goals for every dungeon that yield special medals when met make this game worth playing for hours on end. 9.0
OVERALL SCORE (not an average) 9.0
Closing Comments
Dark Cloud 2 takes the standard sequel road and gives us everything that made the original Dark Cloud great, only bigger and better. Actually, I take that back. Dark Cloud 2 takes everything great from the original Dark Cloud and super sizes it, up sizes it, and then king sizes it just for good measure. The leap in quality between the two games really is amazing. From the incredible graphics, to the great sound, to the refined gameplay, Dark Cloud 2 just oozes of quality and polish. It truly feels like that game that Level-5 always wanted to make with the first Dark Cloud.
As good as this game is, it's not for everyone, especially those who were not fans of the original's dungeon crawling and town building. Because many of the same gameplay elements made their way from the first game, you're still going to get a similar experience, although it'll be a lot prettier this time around. But, if you're main complaints about the first game involved small details, like the frequent breaking of your weapons, or it's lackluster graphics, then definitely give Dark Cloud 2 a try. It fixes almost every problem found in the first game and then adds some sugar coating on top.
In the end, Dark Cloud 2 is a superb RPG that doesn't disappoint. Buy it, play it, then play it some more. You can thank me later.
Dark Cloud 2 is simply a class act all the way. Every element of the game, from the georama system to the weapon upgrading to the interaction with a large cast of characters, displays a polish and attention to quality that you find only in real classics. Level-5 and Sony should both be commended for turning a fair-to-middling old game into what will now be a series to watch with great interest. Dark Cloud 2 could very well be the PlayStation 2's Zelda, and it will appeal to fans of the action RPG genre for a long time to come.
Some early Dark Cloud 2 thoughts
Finally got to put some good time into this game. Huge Dark Cloud 2 session today. Played for almost 8 hours. Not so much impressions but my thoughts on this game so very early on.
As a hardcore Dark Cloud fanatic I had huge expectations for the sequel. Being such a huge fan I think I had higher expectations for the sequel than most people. After reading all the postive reviews for this game I was worried review sources were overstating how good this game in. I can put those worries to rest as this game has blown me away (Cue I'M BLOWN AWAY PIC!).
First off, there is just so many things to do in this game. You can complete the necessary objectives to recruit people, you can work on upgrading Max's gun and wrench, you can work on upgrading Monica's sword and amulet, you can take photos to create inventions, or you can roam around the dungeons just to build up experience, or you can mess around in Georama mode. Dark Cloud 2 offers medals for obtaining certain objectives in the dungeons, offering some nice replayability to the game. So far I have noticed there are three or four objectives to every level. You can get a medal for clearing a level under a certain amount of time, a character specific medal (I.E. Kill all enemies with only Monica's sword or defeat all enemies with just the Ridepod), a fishing objective (Yes this is true. You can take time away from battling in a dungeon to fish. You need to get a fish that is X size to accomplish this goal), and one goal which is still hidden and marked by "???". My goal is to eventually get a medal for every objective. I also like the character specific resources you can use when you choose an auxillary character (I.E. Cedric) to join you in your quests in the dungeon. For example, when you choose Cedric to join Max and Monica, he has SP points which can be used to fix the weapons on Ridepod or even refuel it. Very useful. Each character has their own specific ability. Regarding character switching, having two characters make it extremely easy to switch. You just need to hit L3 to switch main characters and R3 to switch to your Ridepod.
I like the added use of materials added to the invention and Georama mode. Now you actually need raw materials to build either Georama pieces or inventions. The addition to the geosphere was a great addition as well. No longer are you collecting items you can instantly plop down in georama. The geopheres give you ideas for new items you can build in Georama mode. From those ideas you can build the Georama pieces as long as you have the required raw materials to do so. It makes much more sense now. Extra items like paint, chimneys, lights, all add much more customization now. If I did have a complaint, is that you have to use the clean up feature now to move a georama item I.E. a house after you have it plopped down and are working on something else. If I remember correctly, in the first one you could move all items at all times. Small quibble and I may have missed how to do this. Still early i
nto the game.
As a nice touch I like how the atmillia were incorporated into the game. The hero of the first game had a green atmillia where he would store the georama items he found. Now the blue and red atmillia are used as time travel devices for part two.
My biggest complaint about the first one was the half-ass translation SCEA gave the game. Some text was wrong and SCEA even screwed up a tutorial screen by telling you to choose the wrong button. Well, no problems with part two. The text translation is very good, and so is the voice acting. As a bonus Level 5 added a help menu and this is a wonderful resource. Basically take you through more indepth steps than what the ingame tutorial teaches you. SCEA did a great job translating this part too.
Yet I haven't even talked about the atmosphere of the game. It is amazing. One of my roommates who saw my play the game couldn't believe it was the sequel to Dark Cloud. He was amazed that the scenery in the world felt so alive. He is right. The game is very bright and colorful. Game almost has a storybook presentation to it. The main town of Palm Brinks is wonderfully created. You almost have to experience it to believe it.
I'm only about 9 and a half hours into the game, chapter in Sidain. If things keep going the way they have been, this game could end up not only one of the best PS2 games but one of the best games of all time.
