CES 2005: Nyko Charger Packs & More
Triple your battery run on a trip, and see your PSP in a whole new light.
January 9, 2005 - Taking up the challenge of handling the PSP's weakness for long-trip runs on its 4-6 hour battery life, Nyko had for show at CES 2005 a line of products designed to recharge the PlayStation Portable as well as protect the system from damage.
The basic model is the Charger Case for PSP, a brush aluminum case with an exterior beveling molded after the PSP and a form-fitting neoprene lining on the inside. Not much bigger than the PlayStation Portable itself, and extremely light even with its extra battery built in, the case has a cord on the bottom that plugs into the PSP's AC Adapter slot and can recharge the PlayStation Portable twice on a charge for three times the battery life of a standard PSP run. In the prototype, the design is focused on recharging on-the-go versus adding an extra playable battery, so while the PSP will run while drinking off of the PSP Charger Case's battery pack, games aren't playable inside the case. The AC Tap for charging passes straight through both batteries to the system, so charging both the pack and the PSP is just a matter of plugging in once you get to the hotel.
Adding extras to the package, the Theater Experience (pictured above in its concept model, which is somewhat different from the most recent prototype) is designed to deliver the same 3X charging feature of the Charger case and attractive exterior design, but this case also doubles as a stand for video playback on a plane or car ride. Two latches can be extended from the bottom of the system to hold the PSP up at an angle for viewing, with two small, conical speakers (unlike this prototype picture, the real unit will use tiny rubber cone speakers topped off with shiny silver caps) on either side of the system for stereo sound. The interior black neoprene molds to the PSP for storage, and the dark interior also creates a black backdrop for the system while playing video clips. We didn't see a patch-through on the demo unit for headphones, so we're hoping that Nyko adds a headphone port or perhaps two ports to the final design -- the design makes it easier to share PSP video with others, but for most uses of the Theater Experience, it would be nice not to have to disturb others around you who don't want to share. Other than that, it's charging capabilities and relatively small size make this a feature-packed travel case.
Outside of the charger series, Nyko also displayed the Screen Armor, a simple guard face for PSP. The cover is unexpectedly small, designed to add almost nothing to the PSP's bulk in your pocket -- the unit consist simply of a large PSP face plate with two latches that grip the top and bottom of the PSP. Those latches are the curious element of the design, as they don't lock onto mounting pegs or magnetize to the PSP in any specific way -- they simply grip the system tightly enough to stay put -- the hold was strong enough for a pocket, although we would still recommend a full case for tossing a PSP in a backpack or purse. Still, the small weight and portability (the latches fold back up to the Screen Armor face) were a good alternative to a full-size holder. Its brush-aluminum exterior and neoprene screen guard are similar to that of the charging case.
