SPOnG is pleased to be able to put the matter of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. multiplayer fucntionality to bed once and for all. Understand, the following information pertains to the PlayStation 2 version only.
We were at Rockstar yesterday for a viewing of San Andreas. The first question we asked was about the rumoured multiplayer aspects of the game. "There is no multiplayer in San Andreas. GTA has always been a single-player game." However, later in the presentation we were denied the option to view certain cut-scenes that preceeded missions involving two characters (CJ and an accomplice). At the conclusion of the session, SPOnG asked if there would be any further news regarding the game prior to release. "Everything you would like to see in San Andreas should be there," we were told: an interesting response considering that we had made it clear we wanted a multiplayer mode.
This forced the decision to bottom the issue once and for all. So here it is:
For a kick off, there will be no online functionality whatsoever. Rumour claiming online multiplayer is false.
There will, however, be a dedicated co-operative mode for two players. During the game, a scene ensues when the player rescues a girl from a burning building. After this act of gallantry, she becomes your in-game girlfriend and also, a playable second character. Most of the co-op action takes place inside vehicles, with player one driving and player 2 shooting. When the co-op mode is opened, icons will display the missions available to two player on the game's map.
What's more, a plethora of two-player minigames will be included in San Andreas. Unfortunately SPOnG has no specific details regarding these right now, though we can confirm that various parlour games will be included.
That's all for now. Remember where you saw this first.
