Hi @ll
New Jedi Knight
This mystery is even greater than the one of the Sith. Activision says a new Jedi game is in development. Read on for revelations.
January 23, 2003 - Activision's extremely boring and ridiculously long quarterly conference call briefly mentions that, in addition to DOOM III launching in the 2004 fiscal year, another Jedi Knight (part of "various Star Wars products") is in the works. According to the statement, Kyle's next adventure is also set to release in the 2004 fiscal year, which means April 2003 to March 2004. Narrow it down with common sense and a bit of IGN learned rumor, and that means early 2004 for us normals.
Here's where it gets tricky, aside from the conference call, no one is saying anything at all. Lucas Arts' bit of official nothing includes:
"We simply can't confirm anything at this time."
Digging a little deeper into Activision told us the same story, with a heavier emphasis on, "This is Lucas's deal, since they own the property." We did learn one interesting piece of information from our inside kids at Activision though:
"Activision likes to talk about a lot of things in those calls. Everyone else is like, wha?"
The big question is who's going to be making it? The big speculating answer is either Raven or Gray Matter. We know it's a development studio under Activision's arm because the unofficial announcement comes from an Activision call, thus we arrive at the Raven/Gray Matter conclusion.
See, Raven made Jedi Outcast and proved without a shadow of a doubt that it is still easily one of the best development houses in the PC games business. Gray Matter (formerly Xatrix) is Activision's other heavy hitting in-house developer of PC-centric shooters and has been extremely quiet since the stellar Return to Castle Woflenstein hit in the winter of 2001.
Big names like Star Wars demand big talent. Both contenders for the Jedi Outcast crown are more than qualified to take up the sequel. On the one hand, Raven did the first (it seriously ruled on the PC). On the other hand, Raven is also developing the highly anticipated Quake IV and possibly one other, still unannounced title, while Gray Matter sits silent.
Though no specific platforms or specific specifics of any kind were mentioned, and all inquiries were met by the brick wall of doom, we're still hopeful that, like the original Jedi Outcast, the sequel will hit multiple platforms.
We'll have more information as soon as that horrible, life ruining brick wall comes down. Before then, you can help us guess just what the hell they're going to call the game. My money's on:
Star Wars -- Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Return of the Empire 1.
