am the first to admit that I hate Apple. I do not need anyone to convince me of that. But I do know when to give credit when credit is due. So after hearing all the rave reviews and great comments about the iPod I started to want one. Then they released the new iPod minis and I wanted one even more. But like I said I hate Apple and didn’t get one. But today while at Circuit City I saw it and I decided to get it. The following is my take on the iPod.
Today while shopping around I purchased the new 20GB iPod with click wheel for $299. First off, the thing looks great. It’s actually looks better in person then it does in advertisements, I guess it is true when they say the camera ads 10 pounds, or in the iPod’s case 10 ounces.
So I get back here to HardwareGeeks.com and I sit the iPod box on my desk, contemplating whether or not I should open it or return it and get a refund. I twirl the box around toss it in the air catch it set it back on my desk and just look at it. I finally took a little knife and cut into the plastic. I slid the box cover off and opened the box. I must say the iPod was packed perfectly and everything was organized with labels. I was pretty impressed I have never seen something packed so carefully. I like how I was greeted with little messages as I opened the box. “Designed by Apple in California”, “Enjoy”, but the little message that cracked me up the most was the “Do Not Steal Music” in English, French, Dutch, Chinese and Japanese. Sounds like the RIAA got to Apple.
The first thing I did was weigh the iPod as soon as I ripped off the plastic that says, "Do Not Steal Music". I put the iPod on a scale and weighed it and to my disappointment it did weigh 5.6 oz. It felt a little heavier and I so badly wanted it to weigh 5.7 ounces. I really wanted to be able to write that in this review that Steve Jobs lied but I can’t.
So I pulled the cables out ready to charge my new MP3 player, but to my surprise it was already charged. I am the typical know it all geek, so without reading the iPods manual I began the configuration process. I installed the software and plugged the iPod into my computer using the USB Cable. I was happy to see that when the iPod was plugged into the computer it charged it self, before I knew it the configuration process. The entire process took about a minute and was simple just clicked yes and next a few times.
Now that the configuration was complete the iPods screen had a stop sign flashing and the wording “Do Not Disconnect”. I didn’t disconnect it. I sat here for almost an hour waiting for it to say ready to disconnect or something before I finally asked someone who told me it always says that when plugged in to the computer. So I just rebooted the PC and when it booted up I fired up iTunes saw a little red iPod flashing on the left side menu, I clicked it and saw all of my songs being transferred to the iPod it was pretty cool to see for some reason. After I did that, I plugged the iPod into the charger and let it charge. I wanted to try out all the features and see how long I could go with out charging again.
For those of you who do not know what iTunes is, it is the online music store for Apple and works exclusively with the apple iPod. You can purchase songs on iTunes for as little as 99 cents each and complete albums for $9.99. iTunes integrates nicely with the iPod and is one of the best if not the best online music store. iTunes has recently launched world wide but has been available in the US for over a year.
One hour and 53 minutes later the iPod was fully charged. Yup that’s how long it took to charge completely. I thought it charged pretty fast and was content with that time so no complaints there. I started it up and found my way to the songs and started to play them. The first song was rather low and again I will say I do not read manuals it’s a bad habit, so the song is playing low and I am looking for the volume knob. Flipping the iPod over, and turning it around I don’t see anything I am getting frustrated but I know it’s my own fault for not reading the manual, and then a miracle as I placed the iPod down my finger ran over the click wheel and the volume went up. This big grin came across my face when I did that I had fallen in love with the iPod, I started to lower the volume and raise it again. I was a little kid playing with his new favorite toy. After I discovered this moving up and down the menus became easier also I was pressing down on the play button to go down and up on the menu button to go back up but that wasn’t working well but discovering how to lower and raise the volume also taught me how to navigate the menus easier.
The software the iPod uses is great, easy to navigate and very responsive unlike other MP3 players I have tried iPod defiantly is the easiest to use. I checked the Apple website to see if there was a newer version of the software and yep there was 3.0.1 so I decide to download it and was a bit surprised at its size 27Mb. For a minute I thought I was upgrading Windows XP to Windows XP Sp2 ½. The download finished and I began the install process when it was done it asked me to plug the iPod into the ac adapter I did that and the iPod began to upgrade its software. It wasn’t painful to upgrade but a reboot was required and I really dislike rebooting. Any-who, the update went flawlessly, according to Apple, the upgrade only, improved the iPods power management.
After I got the upgrade done I wanted to play some more with the iPod. I made my way to the extras and I checked out the features in there. I found a few good useful tools. I liked that the iPod had these tools, the fact I can add contacts, notes and appointments to the iPod it’s like having a mini PDA with me. I also liked the games but they lacked a bit in my opinion, better and more games are needed. The games are basically clones of very popular games, Break Out (Bricks), Parachute, Solitaire and Music Trivia. The trivia was the most fun. It uses songs from your play list and plays a sample of the song and you have to select which song it is. The faster you select the more points you get. So I sat here and played the Music Trivia game for almost 3 hours straight and Solitaire for another hour and 30 minutes. Then the dreaded battery died. That kind of ticked me off. But I had the backlight on and was playing the game so I guess 4 and a half hours was decent for what I was doing.
I charged up the iPod again and again it took just under 2 hours. I then began to listen to music and just worked on some things and tried to keep my self busy. About several hours later the battery finally went dead again but considering how long 7 hours is that is good battery life considering most people including myself won’t listen to music non stop like that on their iPod. But then again I do know some people who do, but for me the battery life is just right.
I went back to playing with the little extras the iPod has and I wanted to find out more about the Calendar, Clock, Contacts and Notes. I thought these features were really cool; you’re able to transfer your contacts from Outlook to your iPod you can even transfer appointments and leave yourself little reminders in the notes. I like the clock feature so much I left it on with the backlight. Earlier while I was at the store, someone asked me what time it was. I pulled my iPod out and showed them. I know I know I am a show off and that was rude, but I am proud of my new toy.
I love the iPod the only thing that is annoying me right now is that the Silver colored backing gets smeared easily. I am a neat freak and this bothers me a little bit. I keep wiping it but that just makes it look worst and I was told by a few other people with iPods that it happens to them as well but there really isn’t anything that can be done. Another person told me theirs is engraved and the back got a little wet once and parts of the engraved area are rusted and others complained of their backing getting scratched up. So in an effort to get me not to look at it and to prevent damage to the backing I just purchased from Apple the carrying case for the iPod.
I received the Case for the iPod yesterday it's a black nylon case with a belt clip. It cost 39.99 USD. I like the case a lot, but today I noticed that it doesn't protect the backing it also causes some damage to it. On the inside of the case where you slide the iPod there is a little tag with the apple logo. Apparently this tag scratches the backing as well which sucks. Well at least I can't see it.
I guess in the end I am not much of an Apple hater after all. I honestly have no real complaints about the iPod and it's a spectacular product. I am really thinking about getting an iBook since I am on the market for a laptop but since the laptop I was considering cost $800 and the PowerBook G4 with similar specs is in the $2000 range I might have to hold off on that for a while if I do decide to get an iBook. Heck, I maybe even get a Power Mac G5. If the iPod is any indication on the quality of products Apple has to offer then maybe they are worth the high price so many people criticize Apple about.
