Sega Chihiro - Die ultimative Arcade Hardware

Sega offers up a bit of clarification on its upcoming arcade systems.

June 11, 2002 - Sega held the summer version of its semi-annual Private Show, an event dedicated to hyping up the company's upcoming arcade titles. There wasn't too much of interest at this year's show, with the showstopper of choice obviously being Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. Other titles, including Soul Surfer and World Club Champion Football, had either been shown before or didn't interest us all that much (we must admit that we'd be much more interested in the latter game if it wasn't always surrounded by smoking business men).
One area of much needed clarification concerns the company's upcoming arcade boards. As Sega winds down its Naomi support in favor of more powerful options, we're all wondering what will be the next big thing. While we still don't have a clear answer, at least we now know who all the major players are.

Sega displayed a graphic highlighting the four architectures that it will be supporting. Included in the list were the Dreamcast-based Naomi family (this includes Naomi 2), the GameCube based Triforce hardware, the Xbox-based, tentatively titled Chihiro hardware, and the so-called System X. This latter hardware was announced a couple of weeks back as being developed in cooperation with Sammy, publisher of the Guilty Gear series.

The above picture, in addition to the four platforms, also makes reference to Sega's ongoing arcade networking plans. The company still hopes to link up arcades throughout the nation, and different as the four arcade boards may be, they will all figure into the company's networking plans in some way.

One area that surprises us is the lack of support for the PS2-friendly System 246 hardware. Sega, Namco and Sony Computer Entertainment announced long ago that they were working on something along that lines, again as part of Sega's arcade networking plans. They companies even showed what looked like prototype hardware. We haven't a clue what became of that.

Okay, so perhaps things aren't cleared up as much as we were hoping. Wasn't life easier when it was just Naomi, Naomi, Naomi?
