Hi Doc,
I have been an A/V enthusiast for some time now... {entry level} I have a Kenwood 209 Dolby Digital receiver... {I am amazed with its reproduction} Recently, I've added an Energy sub, e:XL-15's and soon e:XL-16's... Also, I just purchased the Toshiba 3109 DVD player... Amazed with its quality... with DVD, and also with its CD... It just blows me away... I've since disconnected my Kenwood 6 CD changer... and use the DVD player exclusively... My questions are so:
1. Is there a difference in quality with AC3 digital connection {optical versus coax} Will I gain better sounds or images using optical instead of coax?
2. Also, when I play regular music CD's I am still using the bitstream as my only connection to my receiver... The sound is amazingly clean... Why does the digital connection sound better that the analog {2ch outs} particularly when playing HDCD's 48kz/20bit...? The sound is more defined and richer... super clean... I want to get the most out of my system... Any info would be great... Thanks,
- Tim...

Dear Tim, Stick with the coaxial connection for digital signals. The plastic fiber optical connection (Toslink) has much narrower bandwidth compared to coaxial connections. This means higher levels of jitter (timing errors) during signal transmission. On many systems, you can hear tighter, more defined bass and a more open and smoother overall sound. Just say NO to Toslink unless you have no other choice. The bitstream connection probably sounds better because the analog circuitry in DVD players is usually of mediocre quality. If the bitstream connection sounds better, then go with it and enjoy the music. Good luck and thanks for reading Planet HiFi. - gk
