Baseball :luxhello:

NEW YORK -- Roger Clemens is a Yankee.

With those five words, displayed on Yankee Stadium's matrix screen in a surprise announcement during the seventh-inning stretch on Sunday, the 44-year-old right-hander ended all the speculation and confirmed his return to the Bronx.

The Yankees officially announced that they have signed Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, to a Minor League contract.

Following the playing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," public-address announcer Bob Sheppard instructed the crowd to draw its attention to the owner's box and the video screen.

The image of Clemens, holding a microphone, drew a loud ovation from the crowd at the game between the Mariners and Yankees, but his comments would soon be drowned out by an even more raucous ovation from the paid attendance of 52,553.

"It's a privilege to be back," Clemens said. "I'll be talking to you all soon."

Clemens returns to the Yankees, where he pitched from 1999 through 2003, serving as a member of two World Series championship teams in 1999 and 2000.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds, baseball's home run king, was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice Thursday and could face prison instead of the Hall of Fame for telling a federal grand jury he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.

The indictment, culminating a four-year investigation into steroid use by elite athletes, charged Bonds with four counts of perjury and one of obstruction of justice. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison.

Shortly after the indictment was handed up, Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, was ordered released after spending most of the past year in prison for refusing to testify against his longtime friend.

"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes,'' the indictment said.

In August, when the 43-year-old Bonds passed Hank Aaron to become baseball's career home run leader, he flatly rejected any suggestion that this milestone was stained by steroids.

"This record is not tainted at all. At all. Period,'' Bonds said.

 die 2.
NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees reportedly have reached agreement on the outline of a 10-year, $275 million contract that would include additional bonuses if he sets the career home run record as a Yankee.

The amount of the guaranteed money was reported Thursday evening by The Associated Press, citing a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been finalized.

Parameters of the deal, which would be the richest in baseball history, were set in place last weekend when Rodriguez reached out to the club. Rodriguez and his wife, Cynthia, then met with Hank and Hal Steinbrenner on Wednesday in Tampa.

"The meeting was a final get-together," Hank Steinbrenner told the AP. "He wanted to make sure myself and my brother knew that he was sincere and serious."
